Journal Entry #4

Today was my last day working at the mine. I have come down with the lung sickness that has been spreading throughout the mine, and my mother thought it would be best if I got out of the mine for good. I feel terrible that I will no longer be able to help support my family, but I know that my life is more important than the little income that I was receiving. My mother says that once my sickness clears up I can go out and look for a job in a factory somewhere, where it is much safer. I have neve… Continue

Journal Entry #3

I have been working at the mine for about a month now, and things are finally starting to get better. The mine was so dark, that I could barely see my hand in front of my face, and I didn't know exactly where everyone was, or even where I was. I was scared the whole time that someone would hit me… Continue

Journal Entry #1

Today is my first day going to work in the mine and I am very scared. I have heard many bad things about the mines here in England, but it was the only job I could get and I know my family needs my help in supplying money. I am only twelve years old and I already have to work, its not fair but it is what I must do. Not only do I have to work twelve hours a day for six days of the week, but I will receive very little money for all my efforts and I will not get to keep any of it. Right now my fami… Continue
