Primary Source

The primary source was written by a twelve year old boy who worked in a mill. He describes it as being very difficult. One thing that made it so difficult is how hungry he was. He was rarely fed breakfast and when he was served breakfast it was very little. The boy worked from six oclock in the morning until seven fifteen at night almost everyday. Since his family did not have very much money, all of the money that he would earn would go to his family in order to have enough money to have food on the table. With some of the money he would earn, he would clothes because all of his other clothes got ruined in the mill. The boy said that when he would get done at work he would be too tired to play or do anything normal children do.

Picture
This picture shows five children in a factory during the Industrial Revolution. None of these children look happy to be where they are. During the Industrial Revolution, many children whose family did not have a lot of money had to work. Children as young as six years old worked in factories during the Industrial revolution. They would work as long as twelve to fourteen hours a day, and had little to no break in between and they were paid very little. Not all children were paid during the revolution. Many orphans did slave-like labor and were paid nothing for their work. The large machines in the factories made it very easy for children to get hurt. It wasn’t uncommon for a child to even get killed because of an accident with a large machine. Life was very difficult for a child working in a factory during the Industrial Revolution.

Journal 4
Today Mr. Brennan got really mad at me because I didn’t thread the spinning Jenny correctly. When he gets mad he gets very loud and threatens to kick me out of his factory. Sometimes I wish he would kick me out so I wouldn’t have to work here anymore. If I didn’t work here though, my family might not have enough money to feed us. Since I didn’t thread the spinning Jenny the right way, I have to redo the whole thing plus do another one to make sure I know how to do it the right way. He said “even if it takes you all night, you’re going to finish your job.” And it did take me all night.

Journal 3
When I woke up this morning I felt very sick but if I don’t go to work than I will get in big trouble from Mr. Brennan. One time when I didn’t go to work Mr. Brennan had me work Saturday from six in the morning until ten at night. On Saturdays, we only have to work from six to twelve. Today was an easy day compared to usual. I had to thread the spinning Jenny which I fixed the day before. Threading is not nearly as bad as having to clean it. My fingers were still a little bit sore from the day before, but they felt better.

Because I am so little for my age, my job is usually to fix the machinery since I can crawl through the small spaces. My mother refuses to make me new clothes because my clothes get so dirty from crawling through spaces and fixing the machines. I get a lot of bruises and cuts from doing this job too. Today, I had to fix a Spinning Jenny. Those are the most difficult to fix because they have the smallest spaces. My fingers were so sore when I got done that I could hardly even move them. Hopefully they will be better by tomorrow so I can do more work.

Journal 1
It is twelve o’clock. I have been in the factory for six hours now. Still, we have not been fed one bite of food. Sometimes, Mr. Brennan will give us breakfast, but he has not for the past two weeks. My little brother is sitting next to me working much harder than any eight year old should. He has not been fed breakfast either and he looks very weak. Although we do not get fed breakfast or lunch, we do get fed dinner. But that is not for another six hours. I usually work twelve hours a day and earn very little, what I do earn goes straight to my parents.
