They symbolize the oath among the working class in an attempt to better themselves by choosing better jobs. The picture with the umbrella maker is a good example because he is showing that he is literate and was able to choose something he is passionate about and he is well disciplined. The picture with the man and octopus shows that the people had the leisure time necessary and the skills and resources to choose a career of painting.
